Almost three years after the ill-fated Titan submersible disaster, which occurred in the Atlantic during an expedition to the Titanic, recovery teams have managed to retrieve the remains of those who perished, according to Christine Dawood, who lost both her husband and 19-year-old son. As reported by The Guardian, identification was confirmed through DNA analysis.
The report mentions that certain recovered fragments could not be separated due to the commingling of DNA. Dawood revealed that she chose not to claim these particular pieces.
Investigators posit that the instantaneous failure of the hull, caused by the immense pressure at that depth, led to the fatalities. Experts suggest the victims likely never realized what was transpiring.
The tragedy involving the Titan submersible took place on June 18, 2023. There were five individuals aboard, and contact with the vessel ceased 1 hour and 45 minutes into its dive. The subsequent search and rescue mission yielded no survivors; only wreckage from the submersible was recovered.
It was previously disclosed that the cause of the Titan submersible’s 2023 catastrophe was a fundamental design flaw. According to a report from the U.S. National Transportation Safety Board, the vessel’s hull evidently did not meet necessary structural integrity standards.
