However, for young children, this substitution elevates the risk of developing type 1 diabetes, obesity, and dental decay. This conclusion was reached by specialists from the UK’s National Health Service, part of a scientific team. The findings of this research were released in the Journal of the BSACI.
The researchers scrutinized the ingredient lists of common oat and soy-based beverages. It was discovered that numerous products include substantial quantities of added sugar while lacking essential nutrients. Even fortified versions fail to supply adequate amounts of calcium and Vitamin B12.
Concerning the extra sugar within these “healthy” dairy alternatives, the figures are alarming: frequent consumption of these drinks means children ingest over 480 grams of excessive sugar monthly. This markedly heightens vulnerabilities to weight gain, cavities, and nutritional deficiencies.
Clinicians in practice report encountering children with such complications with increasing frequency and advocate for an end to the promotion of plant-derived milk substitutes.
