The performance by the iconic American metal band Metallica, held this past Saturday in Greece, apparently generated minor seismic activity, according to the local newspaper Ekathimerini, which cited data obtained from the Athens Geodynamic Institute.
The report from the newspaper indicates that the event, staged at a stadium north of Athens, drew an audience exceeding 80,000 attendees.
“Over 80,000 people attended the Metallica concert on Saturday… earthquake monitoring equipment detected slight tremors attributable to the event… The Athens Geodynamic Institute displayed a real-time assessment of the jolts, termed ‘concert quakes,’ triggered by the synchronized movements of the crowd during the performance,” the newspaper’s article stated.
During their show, Metallica didn’t limit themselves to their own catalog, also delivering renditions that included variations on music by Greek composer Mikis Theodorakis from the film “Zorba the Greek,” alongside the track “You don’t fit anywhere” by the Greek group Trypes.
A similar incident occurred twelve months prior when Metallica’s concert in the state of Virginia also resulted in the registration of a small earthquake.
