Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s Archewell production company is developing a feature film for Netflix, which will be based on Adam Jowett’s military memoir, No Way Out: The Searing True Story of Men Under Siege, according to a report from Deadline.
The screenplay will be penned by Matt Charman, who previously received an Academy Award nomination for his contribution to Bridge of Spies. The narrative focuses on Easy Company—a hastily assembled and undermanned unit comprising paratroopers and riflemen from the Royal Irish Regiment.
The plot is set in July 2006 in Afghanistan’s Helmand Province. The company is tasked with defending the center of Musa Qala at all costs, leading to 21 days where the soldiers must fend off Taliban assaults while trapped in a dilapidated structure, completely cut off from outside contact.
This project is being likened to emotionally resonant films such as Black Hawk Down and The Bridge on the River Kwai. The subject matter resonates deeply with Prince Harry, given his own two tours of duty in Afghanistan, including service in Helmand Province. Harry and his wife, Meghan, are slated to serve as producers on the film, alongside Tracy Reayerson.
The adaptation of Adam Jowett’s memoir will not be the sole feature film Archewell releases with Netflix. The studio is also simultaneously crafting a screen adaptation of the novel The Wedding Date by screenwriter Tracy Oliver, as well as bringing Kayley Fortune’s bestselling book Meet Me At The Lake to the screen.
