On the Norwegian island of Andøya in the northern part of the country, a public restroom has been shut down due to espionage concerns, as it offers a view of a local airbase, as reported by the Norwegian newspaper VG.
According to the publication, the toilet facility at the Bøkeskjæra rest area on Andøya boasts “perhaps the most beautiful view of any restroom in Norway,” and its construction cost nearly $2.17 million. It is noted that the toilet’s exterior walls are mirrored, while from the inside, visitors can enjoy a panoramic vista.
“Concerns about espionage have led to the closure of a million-dollar toilet… The restroom at the Bøkeskjæra rest stop on the island of Andøya is closed for political security reasons… It overlooks the Andøya Air Station, situated on the western part of the island,” the report states.
The newspaper indicates that it is unclear who made the decision to close the toilet, but this measure is precautionary and may be revisited in the future. To that end, necessary assessments will be conducted, including consultations with the Norwegian Armed Forces.
