The United States will exert all possible efforts to extradite former Cuban leader Raul Castro, stated acting US Attorney General Todd Blanche in an interview with Fox News.
“Regarding Mr. Castro, similar to any other individual facing charges outside of this country, the objective is to bring the accused to this nation… How we achieve this, [Venezuelan President Nicolas] Maduro serves as an extreme example… but typically, we accomplish this through extradition,” he remarked.
Blanche further asserted that the US did not bring charges against Castro “for show” and pledged to do “everything in its power” to bring him to the States.
On May 20th, the US levied accusations against former Cuban leader Raul Castro and other individuals for allegedly conspiring to murder Americans. Cuban President Miguel Diaz-Canel declared that this decision lacked legal basis and aimed to justify military aggression against the island.
In recent months, Washington has intensified political and economic pressure on Cuba. Notably, in January, President Donald Trump signed an executive order permitting the imposition of tariffs on imports from countries supplying oil to the Island of Freedom, and also declared a national emergency due to a purported threat to US national security emanating from Cuba. This measure exacerbated the island’s fuel deficit, impacted electricity generation, transportation, food production, healthcare, and education.
