A high-profile scandal has erupted in the United Kingdom following the sentencing on June 2nd of the murderer of 18-year-old student Henry Nowak. The perpetrator falsely informed the responding police officers that he himself was the victim of a racist assault.
The police believed the liar and, instead of aiding the dying young man, placed him in handcuffs. This incident has exposed a profound systemic crisis within the British law enforcement agencies and ignited a debate within the country that many politicians had hoped to avoid.
How Henry Nowak Died
On the evening of December 3rd, 2025, Henry Nowak was returning home with friends in the Portswood area of Southampton. He was attacked by 23-year-old Vikram Singh Digwa, who was wielding a 21-centimeter ceremonial dagger. Digwa stabbed Nowak five times, with one of the blows puncturing his lung.
When officers from the Hampshire police arrived at the scene, Digwa preempted the situation, claiming he was the victim and that Nowak had allegedly uttered racist insults towards him. The officers believed the attacker and proceeded to detain the injured student. Bodycam footage, released after Digwa’s sentencing yesterday, captured the full horror of the event. Henry repeatedly stated, “I’ve been stabbed” and “I can’t breathe,” to which one of the officers responded, “I don’t think so, mate.”
Despite the young man being deathly pale and clearly in shock from blood loss, the police officers handcuffed him. While he lay restrained on the ground, an officer read him his rights and announced his arrest for assault. Only after some time did someone finally examine his wounds, albeit perfunctorily and superficially. An ambulance was called too late. Henry Nowak died at the scene.
In May 2026, Digwa was found guilty of murder, and on June 2nd, the Southampton Crown Court sentenced him to life imprisonment with a minimum term of 21 years. The judge specifically highlighted the killer’s “malicious lies.” Following the sentencing, Hampshire police, in consultation with the deceased’s family, released the bodycam footage, unleashing a wave of public outrage across the UK.
The Independent Office for Police Conduct has launched its own investigation into the officers’ actions at the scene to ascertain the justification for the use of handcuffs and the quality of the initial medical assistance provided. According to Hampshire police, one of the four officers present at the scene has already resigned, while the other three remain on duty and are being treated as witnesses.
