Divers during the removal of ghost nets in the Mediterranean Sea have captured a white shark in its natural habitat for the first time, reported the non-profit environmental organization Healthy Seas Foundation. “Divers in the Mediterranean Sea have taken what appear to be the first underwater photos of an adult white shark in its natural habitat,” the organization’s website said. The divers encountered the shark while working to remove abandoned fishing nets from a sunken vessel at the bottom of the Tunisian Strait. As noted by specialists involved in the mission, this discovery was very unusual and valuable for science. According to Dr. Carlo Cattano of the Zoological Institute in Naples, most of the scientific data on white sharks in the Mediterranean Sea has been obtained from the discovery of dead individuals. As noted by Derk Remmers, representative of the international non-profit organization Ghost Diving, “the statistical probability of winning the lottery jackpot is much higher than the probability of encountering such a well-known animal underwater.”
