A collective of independent artists has initiated legal proceedings against Google. Their assertion is that the company exploited their music, uploaded to YouTube, without obtaining prior authorization. The purpose? To train the musical neural network known as Lyria 3.
In their defense, Google contended that the musicians are unable to provide evidence of their tracks being used for training. Furthermore, they claim that even if such use occurred, Google possesses the legal right to do so. The company cited YouTube’s terms of service, which stipulate that by uploading a video, users grant Google permission to reproduce, distribute, and create derivative works based on that content.
When approached by journalists for clarification on whether YouTube videos are indeed used to train Lyria, Google declined to comment.
