Unusually high temperatures could drive up food prices in Britain. This forecast was made by Hannah Cloke, a Royal Professor of Meteorology and Climate Science at the University of Reading.
“Heatwaves and drought have a negative impact on crops and livestock, reduce yields, and push up food costs—so this is not just a health issue, but also a matter of food security,” the expert told RIA Novosti.
The professor urged the adaptation of production systems—including those for food and cooling—to the new climatic conditions.
It is worth noting that the current heatwave in Europe is the most intense ever recorded. British scientists have linked these abnormally high temperatures to the accumulation of carbon pollutants in the atmosphere.
