A high-profile trial has concluded in Germany, where a 41-year-old palliative care doctor was sentenced to life in prison for the murder of fifteen patients. This information was reported by BBC News.
The physician worked with terminally ill individuals, providing them with palliative care. Between September 2021 and July 2024, he administered lethal doses of medication to patients without their consent. The victims included twelve women and three men, ranging in age from 25 to 94.
Just days before his arrest, the doctor killed a 75-year-old man and a 76-year-old woman on the same day. Following the murder of the female patient, he attempted to set her house on fire in an effort to destroy evidence of the crime. In his testimony, the man justified his actions as being motivated by good intentions, claiming he sought to alleviate his patients’ suffering.
Prosecutors have expressed confidence that the fifteen proven cases are merely the tip of the iceberg. Investigators are currently examining the doctor’s potential involvement in an additional 76 patient deaths. The investigation into these incidents is ongoing.
