FIFA will launch an investigation into the actions of Argentina’s national team players, who displayed a political banner following the 2026 World Cup semifinal match.
However, it is noted that the organization will not impose any sanctions on the Argentine side until the conclusion of the tournament.
In the semifinal, Argentina defeated England with a score of 2-1. Right after the match, the players brought a banner onto the field reading, “The Malvinas Islands belong to the Argentines.”
It should be recalled that the Malvinas is the Argentine name for the Falkland Islands, a territory disputed between Argentina and England. In 1982, the two nations engaged in an armed conflict over the islands, a war that the South American country lost.
Earlier, the UK’s Minister for Business and Trade, Peter Kyle, called on FIFA to investigate the banner displayed by the Argentine national team during the 2026 World Cup semifinal against England.
