Firefighters responding to a call at a private home in the U.S. state of Michigan discovered eight bodies, including six minors, with some of the victims showing signs of gunshot wounds, local authorities reported.
On Friday morning, firefighters arrived in Grand Haven (Ottawa County, Michigan) following reports of a burning smell, but found no source of ignition. Several hours later, crews returned after a report of white smoke coming from the residence.
“I can confirm that two adults and six children lost their lives,” police captain Jake Sparks told reporters.
According to him, some of the victims had gunshot wounds. The exact causes of death and the identities of the deceased have not yet been determined. County police believe all the victims were members of the same family living in that home.
The sheriff’s office is considering both the possibility of arson and the scenario of a collective suicide.
