
A major step forward in quantum computing has been reported: researchers have successfully demonstrated logical qubits — error-corrected units of quantum information that enable more reliable computations. In January 2026, QuEra Computing showcased 96 logical qubits executing a complete algorithm on 448 physical qubits. This is the largest number of algorithmic logical qubits reported to date. The approach uses a high-rate error-correcting code that encodes six logical qubits from sixteen physical qubits. The shift from merely increasing the number of physical qubits to developing error-corrected logical qubits marks a critical transition toward building scalable, fault-tolerant quantum systems capable of solving complex real-world problems. Other groups, like Quantinuum, are also making strides with different qubit technologies (e.g., trapped-ion systems).
