
NASA has made a significant breakthrough in space robotics: the Perseverance rover now has the ability to determine its own precise location on Mars without assistance from Earth — a capability called Mars Global Localization. Previously, operators on Earth had to manually match panoramic images from the rover with orbital imagery to correct accumulated positional errors, a process that could take a day or more. The new algorithm rapidly compares panoramic images from the rover’s navigation cameras with onboard orbital terrain maps, allowing the rover to determine its location within about ten feet in approximately two minutes. This advancement reduces operational workload, enables more autonomous route planning, and allows the rover to independently flag interesting surface features for the science team.
