According to media reports, 77-year-old Gail Giustino was arrested on July 20 after approximately one hundred cats were found in her home living in unsanitary conditions. Investigators stated that the temperature inside the house—which lacked air conditioning—exceeded 40°C (104°F), and the floors were covered in a thick layer of excrement. Some cats required assistance to free their paws from hardened feces so they could walk again.
The sheriff’s office reported that the homeowner had been cited dozens of times since 2014 for animal control violations. Despite this, the situation continued to deteriorate. She has been charged with animal cruelty and failure to provide proper care.
Police noted that the woman genuinely believed she was helping the animals, even though her actions caused them to suffer. Law enforcement officials also expressed hope that she would receive the necessary psychiatric care.
Shelter staff reported that many of the rescued cats were in a severe state of psychological distress and showed almost no reaction to people. However, after a few days, they began to show interest in their surroundings, meowing and seeking attention.
Some of the animals have already been reunited with their original owners. For instance, Florida resident Linh Nguyen was reunited with her cat, Patchy, after seven months; she had been searching for him unsuccessfully since the beginning of the year. Animals whose owners are not located will be placed with new families following rehabilitation.
