
DARPA is preparing to launch its Robotic Servicing of Geosynchronous Satellites (RSGS) program this summer. The mission aims to revolutionize satellite maintenance by deploying a dexterous robotic servicer. Unlike traditional approaches, this robot will be able to perform critical tasks on satellites in geosynchronous orbit (approximately 22,236 miles above Earth) — such as on-orbit upgrades, inspections, resolving anomalies, and even relocating spacecraft. The goal is to extend the operational lifespan of satellites, address the growing issue of space debris, and reduce collision risks. The RSGS payload will be integrated with a spacecraft from SpaceLogistics, and the program emphasizes the robot’s ability to adapt to various mission conditions safely and efficiently.
