The study, published in Science Advances, shows that cypin helps tag specific proteins at synapses — the tiny gaps where neurons communicate. By doing so, it ensures the right proteins are in place for effective neuronal signaling, which is crucial for learning and memory. Additionally, cypin interacts with the proteasome, a complex that breaks down proteins, and by binding to it, slows this process, leading to a controlled accumulation of proteins that supports synaptic function. This finding could pave the way for new therapies targeting protein regulation in neurodegenerative diseases like Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s, and those resulting from traumatic brain injuries.
