
An experimental drug called KCL-286 has shown promise in addressing multiple hallmarks of Alzheimer’s disease simultaneously. Originally developed for spinal cord injury, this orally bioavailable small molecule has already cleared Phase 1 safety trials, which could significantly accelerate its progression to Alzheimer’s-specific clinical testing. In a mouse model, the drug demonstrated the ability to repair DNA damage (specifically double-strand breaks in neurons) and reduce neuroinflammation — processes that occur early in the disease’s progression. By targeting several pathways at once rather than focusing solely on amyloid plaques or tau tangles, KCL-286 represents a broader therapeutic strategy that may slow the disease’s progression rather than merely alleviating symptoms.
