Footballer Lionel Messi intends to sue journalists who violated his family’s privacy during the funeral of his father, Jorge Messi, according to journalist Fran Casaretto on X.
The elder Messi passed away on Friday at 10:00 PM local time in a Rosario hospital. He was 68 years old. A private funeral service was held on August 9.
According to the source, Messi will take legal action against Argentine media outlets whose representatives violated the family’s privacy during the ceremony.
Media had previously reported on the serious illness of Messi’s father during the World Cup. On the night of July 17 (Moscow time), the Argentine national team defeated Algeria 3–0 in their opening group-stage match; Messi scored a hat-trick. After the game, the Argentine stated that he could not hold back tears after his first goal because he had endured a few difficult days prior to the match. A few days later, the footballer’s family announced that Jorge Messi was under medical supervision.
Messi is 39 years old and holds the record as the all-time top scorer for the Spanish league, FC Barcelona, and the Argentine national team. The forward is also the only player in history to win the Ballon d’Or eight times. For many years, Jorge Messi represented his son’s interests and managed his career affairs.
