
Scientists at the Russian University of Medicine (Russian Ministry of Health) have learned how to extract stem cells from baby teeth. This could become the foundation for a technology for growing teeth for future transplantation. Oleg Yanushevich, the rector of the university and chief dental specialist at the Russian Ministry of Health, told TASS.
Since the mid-2000s, Japan, Australia, the United States, and several other countries have been actively developing tooth rudiments from stem cells. Japanese scientists have achieved the most significant progress: using rats, they demonstrated the possibility of growing a tooth tailored to the desired side, shape, purpose, and function.
“As part of our research, we have learned how to extract stem cells from extracted baby teeth, which could be a significant contribution to the creation of a stem cell cryobank in the future. These cells could then be used to grow tooth rudiments and perform transplants. This is especially important for people who have lost a large number of teeth, as it would be a good option for restoring chewing function,” he said.
