American actor Brad Pitt revealed that he has ended his seven-year period of total abstinence from alcohol. The topic came up spontaneously during an interview with Esquire magazine when the actor offered the journalist a glass of wine. He clarified that he now allows himself only “a couple of glasses” and nothing more.
“I was sober for seven years, and then I went off track again. I have to treat this professionally,” Pitt explained.
Pitt gave up alcohol completely in 2016. This followed a high-profile incident aboard a private jet—rumored to be a primary cause of the breakdown of his marriage to Angelina Jolie. In court documents, the actress alleged that her husband had physically harmed her and one of their children during the flight. The couple’s divorce was finalized in 2019, though they only settled all outstanding disputes last year.
The actor first spoke openly about his struggle with addiction and his participation in the “12-step” program in 2019. At the time, he admitted that he had “taken things as far as I could,” forcing him to give up the privilege of drinking. Pitt also noted that while he was initially afraid to speak at group meetings, the sincerity and openness of other participants inspired him on his path to recovery.
