
Microsoft has unveiled Majorana 1, the world’s first quantum processor powered by topological qubits. This represents a radical shift in approach: instead of relying solely on error-correction codes to fix mistakes after they happen, the team aims to build error resistance directly into the hardware itself. They achieved this by developing and using a new class of materials called topoconductors. When cooled to near absolute zero and tuned with magnetic fields, these materials form topological superconducting nanowires with Majorana Zero Modes at their ends, creating qubits that are inherently more stable. The long-term goal is to scale this technology to arrays capable of supporting a million qubits on a single chip, paving the way for a fault-tolerant quantum computer.
