Large wildfires raged on the Halkidiki peninsula in Greece, with flames threatening residential areas and popular resort zones like Siviri and Furka. The fire started in agricultural lands and forests before spreading to homes. Due to the approaching flames, emergency services had to evacuate people — some by land, while others were rescued by sea: boats, including those from the Coast Guard, transported 481 people to safety. Additionally, an evacuation was carried out from a hotel in Furka. Part of the population tried to leave by car, causing significant traffic jams at the exits. The fire destroyed approximately 110 square kilometers of forest. To combat the blaze, Greek authorities deployed 155 firefighters, 59 units of equipment, nine aircraft, and seven helicopters. Unfortunately, two firefighters sustained injuries and were hospitalized. Experts attribute the outbreak to the abnormal heatwave that has affected Europe this summer.
