Apple has completed training of its own large language model specifically tailored for the Chinese market, with technical support from Alibaba. This marks a strategic shift: previously, the company relied on third-party models for AI features in China, but local regulatory constraints (like restrictions on foreign AI services) made this approach unworkable. The new model will serve as the foundation for rolling out Apple Intelligence features in China, with plans to integrate Alibaba’s Qwen model (and potentially Baidu’s) to handle text and image generation. By developing its own solution, Apple aims to gain greater control over AI functionalities on its devices in the region and better compete with local tech giants like Huawei. The rollout is expected in the coming months following iOS updates.
