In response to the ongoing Bundibugyo virus outbreak, clinical trials for potential therapeutic candidates have commenced in the Democratic Republic of the Congo. Early in the epidemic, researchers initiated tests of two drug candidates, while separate vaccine trials for this specific strain are also underway. The urgency stems from the fact that existing treatments certified for other Ebola species (like Zaire ebolavirus) did not initially show strong cross-protection against Bundibugyo, necessitating dedicated research.
