Rachele Ferrara, a 28-year-old Italian woman, has died after choking on a piece of bacon and spending six days in a coma. The local newspaper La Repubblica reported the story.
The tragedy occurred on August 14 in the town of Capodimonte, in the province of Viterbo. When she began experiencing breathing difficulties, she went outside to call for help.
Paramedics who arrived at the scene were unable to clear her airway—even after attempting the Heimlich maneuver—and the prolonged lack of oxygen caused irreversible damage. She was admitted to the intensive care unit, but her heart stopped six days later.
She is survived by two children—a five-year-old son and an eight-year-old daughter—as well as her parents and a sister. The family consented to organ donation.
