
Researchers at Loughborough University’s Emergent Photonics Research Centre have demonstrated a new type of microchip that produces a precisely organised “rainbow” of light frequencies, known as a microcomb. This stable spectrum can be converted into multiple high-frequency millimetre waves. Millimetre waves offer significantly greater bandwidth, which is crucial for the high-capacity communications needed for 6G networks. Additionally, the same technology could enhance precision timing applications, which are vital for advancing quantum technologies. The team also showed they can control the microcomb, amplifying or weakening specific frequencies as needed. While the chip itself is grain-of-rice-sized, the full system is currently a tabletop laboratory setup, but the breakthrough represents a significant step toward practical, high-speed communication and quantum-enabled systems.
