
Researchers from the University of Chinese Academy of Sciences made a key discovery about how the heart repairs itself after a heart attack. Previous studies suggested the heart tries to enlarge existing arteries or grow new ones, but this team used more precise cell-tracking techniques and found that the primary work is done by tiny capillaries. These capillaries essentially transform themselves, acting like arteries to reroute blood flow around the damaged area. The team also identified the signaling protein VEGF-A as a potential target: temporarily boosting it in mouse models improved blood flow, reduced heart scarring, and enhanced heart function. This finding could inform future therapies to enhance recovery after cardiac injury.
