A team of researchers has developed a novel intranasal vaccine candidate called NanoSTING-SN. This formula uses tiny fat droplets to deliver an immune-boosting ingredient (cGAMP) that activates the body’s innate immune system in the nasal compartment. Preclinical studies suggest it has broad-spectrum protection: it can protect against multiple coronaviruses and variants, and importantly, it may also prevent the transmission of highly transmissible strains to unvaccinated individuals. The advantage of nasal delivery is that it targets the primary entry point for many respiratory viruses, offering a potential new tool to combat future outbreaks.
