A Japanese boy has spent three years in a coma after choking on food at his nursery school, The Mainichi reports.
The incident that left the child in this condition occurred in 2023. The boy, named Koshi, was eight months old at the time. While at the nursery, he choked on a piece of apple that was being served to the children.
Resuscitation efforts were not successful in time, resulting in severe brain damage. He was discharged from the hospital several months later and is now being cared for by his parents at home.
His family describes their routine as a demanding “schedule.” They reposition their son every two hours to prevent mucus from accumulating in his lungs, and his condition is monitored hourly. A physical therapist also works with the boy, as his body’s growth causes tension in some parts of his torso while others remain relaxed.
In July of this year, the supply of medical items provided to the family free of charge was cut from ten packs to just one. Reusing the supplies carries a risk of bacterial pneumonia, but the family says they have no other choice.
