An Albanian national dubbed the “escape artist” by the media has been arrested in Spain, REN TV reports, citing The Guardian.
The fugitive was found in Tarragona. He had last escaped from a maximum-security Italian prison in December of last year; during that breakout, he managed to saw through the bars, climb out the window, and descend using a rope made of knotted bedsheets.
He had previously escaped from prisons in Terni and Parma. During an escape from a Belgian facility, inmates formed a human pyramid to scale the wall.
The fugitive resisted arrest.
The criminal was serving a sentence running until 2048 for violent robbery, theft, and drug trafficking. He has now been taken into custody and faces extradition to Italy.
Separately, in the Czech city of Ústí nad Labem, a man who had been on the run after escaping prison voluntarily turned himself in to the authorities to return to jail.
