A critical situation has emerged in Germany: two fatal cases of malaria have been confirmed among workers at Frankfurt International Airport. At least six people have been infected in total, reports Hessenchau.
The outbreak was caused by disease-carrying mosquitoes that entered the cargo holds of aircraft arriving in Europe from endemic regions. Such cases—known as “airport malaria”—are rare but extremely dangerous; infection occurs on airport grounds among workers who have not traveled to high-risk areas abroad. Consequently, individuals do not associate their symptoms with a tropical disease, yet with malaria, it is critical that treatment begins immediately upon the onset of illness (or even during the asymptomatic stage if there is a risk of infection).
