NASA is entering the final stage of preparations for the launch of the Nancy Grace Roman Space Telescope. The observatory is scheduled to lift off aboard a SpaceX Falcon Heavy rocket no earlier than 7:26 a.m. EDT (11:26 GMT) on August 30, 2026, from Launch Complex 39A at NASA’s Kennedy Space Center in Florida. This mission represents a significant leap in astronomical capabilities: Roman will have a field of view at least 100 times larger than Hubble’s, allowing it to survey vast sections of the sky much more rapidly. Its primary objectives include investigating the nature of dark energy and dark matter, searching for exoplanets, and studying the evolution of galaxies and stars. After launch, the telescope will travel to the Sun-Earth Lagrange Point 2 (L2), where it can maintain a stable observing geometry. If the August 30 attempt proceeds successfully, Roman will begin its journey toward L2, followed by deployment, testing, and commissioning of its instruments.
