
Inter Miami defeated Montreal 7–1 in a home match of the MLS regular season.
The hosts’ midfielder Casemiro opened the scoring in the 20th minute; it was his first goal for the team. Montreal forward Fabian Herbers scored in the 37th minute.
Inter Miami forward Lionel Messi found the net in the 40th minute. He also scored in the 52nd, 83rd, and 90+6th minutes. The remaining goals came from forward Luis Suárez (80th minute) and midfielder Alexander Shaw (89th minute). Messi also provided an assist.
This was Inter Miami’s first match following the appointment of their new head coach, 52-year-old Argentine Cristian Alberto “Kily” González.
During his playing career, Kily played for Inter, Valencia, San Lorenzo, Rosario, Zaragoza, and Boca Juniors.
Inter Miami (42 points from 22 games) sits in second place in the MLS Eastern Conference standings, while Montreal (21 points) is in 14th place.
