Court acquits mother who killed her two young sons.
A New York court has found 26-year-old Daimon Fleming not guilty by reason of insanity in the 2022 killing of her two young sons. Psychiatric evaluations determined that the woman was suffering from postpartum psychosis at the time of the crime. The New York Post reported this on August 28.
“She was in a state of severe psychosis and was detached from reality,” stated psychiatrist Eric Goldsmith, who examined Fleming at the prosecution’s request.
The incident occurred on November 26, 2022, at a family shelter in the Bronx. The two children—aged three and 11 months—were found in a bathtub filled with water. Both children had sustained multiple stab wounds. Their mother was initially charged with first-degree murder.
According to the report, experts for both the prosecution and the defense concluded that Fleming was in a state of psychosis at the time of the killings. She was experiencing hallucinations, believed the end of the world was imminent, and thought a spirit had possessed her body. The defense argued that she believed her actions were necessary to “purify” the children.
Fleming will not be released yet. The court has ordered a new psychiatric evaluation to determine whether she poses a danger to others. The next hearing is scheduled for September 18.
