
Barcelona has commented on forward Lionel Messi’s decision to retire from the Argentina national team.
Earlier, the 39-year-old Messi announced his decision on social media. The forward’s final match for the national team was the 2026 World Cup final against Spain (0–1 after extra time).
“You gave everything until your very last breath. Your country and all of Barcelona are proud of the legacy you leave behind,” the Catalan club stated.
Messi played for Barcelona from 2003 to 2021. With the team, he won the Spanish league title 10 times, the Copa del Rey 7 times, the Spanish Super Cup 8 times, the Champions League 4 times, the UEFA Super Cup 3 times, and the Club World Cup 3 times.
