Researchers analyzed data from participants in a sustained weight loss intervention and found that plateaus often coincide with changes in resting metabolic rate (RMR) and hormonal adaptations. As the body loses weight, RMR decreases, making further weight loss more challenging. Additionally, the study highlighted shifts in levels of hormones like leptin and ghrelin, which regulate appetite and energy balance. These findings underscore the complexity of weight management and suggest that interventions should not only focus on calorie deficit but also address these physiological adaptations. Future strategies may include personalized approaches that account for individual metabolic responses to sustain long-term weight loss.
