Researchers are developing self-healing coatings that can repair themselves when damaged. The technology works by embedding microcapsules within the coating structure. When a crack or scratch appears, the microcapsules rupture and release a repair agent that polymerizes, sealing the breach within hours. Combining this with IoT sensors allows for predictive maintenance: the system can detect damage early and trigger the healing process before the problem escalates. Early commercial deployments are already underway in bridge infrastructure, offshore platforms, and pipeline networks.
