
The LUX-ZEPLIN (LZ) experiment, conducted deep underground in a former gold mine in South Dakota, has recorded a rare particle interaction that looks unusually difficult to explain as ordinary background noise. Researchers detected a single event with a nuclear recoil energy of about 248 kiloelectronvolts, which they interpret as a potential collision between a hypothetical dark matter particle and a xenon nucleus. While the statistical significance (2.6 sigma) is not yet high enough to officially declare an discovery (the gold standard in particle physics is 5 sigma), this is currently the most compelling potential signal LZ has reported. The team is now collecting more data to determine whether this event repeats — if it does, it could mark a major breakthrough in particle physics.
