Major Music Publishers Sue AI Creators for Piracy
Sony Music Publishing and Warner Chappell have filed a lawsuit against Anthropic, the creators of the AI Claude. The lawsuit was filed in US federal court. The publishers are seeking compensation for the use of “tens of thousands” of copyrighted songs.
By law, up to $150,000 can be awarded for each work, with an additional $25,000 for each removal of “proprietary author information.”
The complaint names not only the company itself but also its co-founders, Dario Amodei and Benjamin Mann. According to the plaintiffs, Mann downloaded more than five million pirated books via torrent, and the company’s employees downloaded at least two million more. Furthermore, it is alleged that Anthropic scraped song lyrics from sites like MusixMatch and LyricFind.
