OpenAI announced that its internal AI model has found a singularity (a point where the solution «blows up») in the Navier-Stokes equations. These equations describe fluid motion and are part of the Clay Mathematics Institute’s Millennium Prize Problems, with a $1 million reward for a solution. The company used around 10,000 autonomous AI agents, and the result was formally verified using the Lean programming language. However, the announcement sparked controversy: mathematician Tristan Buckmaster alleged that OpenAI learned of his and Levent Alpöge’s related progress and adopted a similar method. OpenAI denied using their specific data but acknowledged that de-identified model training data might have indirectly influenced the approach.
