“Scientists from the G.B. Elyakov Pacific Institute of Bioorganic Chemistry (PIBOC) and the A.V. Zhirmunsky National Scientific Center of Marine Biology (NSCMB)—both part of the Far Eastern Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences—have discovered a substance in ‘Alpha’ variety grapes that could offer new hope for Parkinson’s disease patients. The substance is trans-vitisin B, a complex molecule composed of four resveratrol units. In experiments on mice, it did not merely alleviate symptoms but actually protected nerve cells from dying,” the statement reads.
The institute noted that, although the scientists have so far conducted only preclinical trials, the research opens up possibilities for activating the cells’ own defense mechanisms using natural compounds, rather than relying on the traditional approach of treating only the disease’s symptoms.
