A new consensus statement from the International Society of Sports Nutrition confirms that high-quality plant proteins, particularly soy and pea isolates, support muscle protein synthesis to a degree comparable to whey when consumed in adequate amounts and combined with resistance training. The study analyzed nitrogen balance, amino acid kinetics, and hypertrophy markers across 12 controlled trials involving over 600 participants, showing that 40 grams of plant protein post-workout can achieve similar anabolic effects as animal-derived options.
Researchers emphasize that the key is not just protein quantity but also leucine content and digestibility. Soy protein naturally contains sufficient leucine, while pea blends are often fortified to match this threshold. Additionally, combining different plant sources (e.g., legumes with grains) throughout the day helps cover all essential amino acids, making well-planned vegan diets fully adequate for active individuals.
These findings are already influencing updated national dietary guidelines, which now recommend diversifying protein sources and reducing reliance on red meat without compromising muscle health. Experts suggest including at least two plant-based protein meals per day, such as lentil curry, tofu stir-fry, or pea protein smoothies, to support long-term metabolic health and sustainability.
