Christa Pike, who survived a botched execution attempt in Tennessee, has regained consciousness. Local TV station WSMV reported this on October 6, citing the woman’s attorneys. According to them, Pike is speaking and continues to receive medical care.
The incident occurred on September 30 at a Nashville prison. The condemned woman was administered two doses of the lethal injection but remained alive; in the process, the executioners went through seven needles. Her defense team had previously warned that she suffered from thrombocytosis—a condition where administering the drug could trigger blood clots and cause additional suffering.
Pike was set to become the first woman executed in Tennessee in over 200 years. Following the botched procedure, State Governor Bill Lee ordered an investigation and halted another execution scheduled for 2026.
A scandal had previously erupted over the failed execution attempt; as a result, Frank Strada, the head of the local Department of Correction, resigned.
