A new study highlights that while people may understand the value of a varied, healthy diet, several practical barriers can prevent them from consistently following it. Researchers found that obstacles go beyond just high food prices. Lack of time, inadequate cooking or storage facilities, transportation limitations, and unsuitable packaging can all hinder access to nutritious foods. The analysis also noted that socio-economic factors disproportionately affect micronutrient intake: people in disadvantaged situations are more likely to experience “hidden hunger” despite knowing the benefits of a diverse diet. The findings suggest that effective nutrition strategies need to address these contextual challenges, such as through localized food aid programs, nutrition education tailored to local circumstances, and policies that improve access to healthy options.
