The World Health Organization (WHO) and regional health agencies are scaling up containment operations following the cross-border spread of the Bundibugyo species of Ebola. While the Democratic Republic of the Congo remains the epicenter with nearly 9,000 confirmed cases, a fatal imported infection in Kenya has put East African nations on high alert. Because there are currently no approved vaccines or targeted therapies specifically for the Bundibugyo strain, global health response teams are relying heavily on rapid isolation, supportive care, and strict community-level contact tracing to sever chains of transmission.
