In late September, American Christa Pike underwent a procedure involving the administration of two lethal injections. The execution attempt was unsuccessful. Due to confusion, medical personnel were late in providing aid to the woman; it took half an hour to reach a decision on allowing medics access, the AP reports.
It is reported that Pike required urgent hospitalization following the botched execution. However, emergency responders could not reach an agreement with Tennessee prison officials regarding access for the medical team. A 911 call was placed an hour after the second injection was administered.
“Precious minutes ticked by as officials and emergency responders tried to determine whether a request for urgent medical aid inside the execution chamber was lawful,” the article states.
Pike was eventually hospitalized. She has now begun eating on her own and moving about with assistance. She has been in the hospital for a week.
