La Liga President Javier Tebas has responded to Real Madrid’s demand for his resignation, accusing the club’s leadership of attempting to discredit him and harm the Spanish league. He outlined his position on social media.
Tebas stated that for the past 13 years, representatives of Real Madrid have repeatedly sought his removal from office and filed complaints against him. He emphasized that he considers it his duty to protect the interests of La Liga, including against criticism from media outlets affiliated with the Madrid club.
The league chief also rejected accusations that he failed to take action regarding the “Negreira case”—which concerns payments made by FC Barcelona to the former vice-president of the Technical Committee of Referees—asserting that La Liga has been addressing the matter from the very beginning. Furthermore, Tebas pointed out that Real Madrid president Florentino Pérez had previously advocated for cooperation with Barcelona, despite the current deterioration in relations between the two clubs.
Tebas called on Real Madrid to provide concrete evidence of any influence Negreira may have exerted over individual referees, noting that public accusations should not serve as a substitute for a proper investigation. He added that while reforms to the refereeing system are ongoing, decisions within Spanish football cannot be made solely to serve the interests of a single club.
In closing, Tebas accused Real Madrid of attempting to undermine confidence in the national league, characterizing the actions of the club’s leadership as intimidation. He challenged the club to correct any inaccurate information and to disclose details regarding their requests to alter the match schedule, ensuring that any discussion of the situation is grounded in facts.
