Librarians in British Columbia were astonished when a dusty copy of Herman Wouk’s novel War and Remembrance was quietly returned after being overdue for 43 years. The book, originally due back in September 1983, contained an old checkout card but no clue about who finally returned it. Library staff estimated that, under historical fine policies, the overdue fees could have exceeded $3,000. Instead of seeking penalties, librarians celebrated the return of one of the most overdue books in the institution’s history.
